As an independent information business owner who works from home, it’s important for me to not only be a member of professional associations, but to also participate in those groups as actively as possible so that I continue to learn new things, reinforce established norms, and network with colleagues. I attended a great professional development webinar today hosted by the Association of Independent Information Professionals (AIIP) titled “The Good, the Bad and The Ugly: Top Info Pro Lessons for Growing Your Business.”
AIIP member panelists provided some valuable insights into how they started and continue to run their businesses. I might call this “passive feedback.” I’m not controlling the conversation (although there were ample Q&A opportunities), but I’m benefiting from the conversation and in a sense being given that which I seek: reassurance, reality affirmations, and respect for my work and what I’m trying to achieve.
Some of the key reminders and learning points in today’s webinar included:
- Be a helpful resource for clients – that’s a good way to grow your client base.
- Find resilience in the face of rejection and learn how to move on.
- Don’t neglect your professional development – no one’s guiding it but you.
These things help you keep discovering what you’re good at. Since small or large pivots will likely be needed along the way, be receptive to the change. Each of us should enjoy the work we’re doing.
